Farm Safety Ontario

There are many potential dangers on farms that can cost you and your business. Children are especially vulnerable to farm dangers. There are resources available that can help you ensure their safety.

Helpful resources for families:

Canadian Agricultural Safety Association  (CASA)

Vision: A Canada where no one is hurt farming

Mission: To make agriculture a safe and healthy environment in which to work and live by helping producers and community partners to recognize and manage risk.

In an average year, Canada mourns the loss of over 100 adults and children due to agricultural fatalities. The agriculture sector is one of the most hazardous in Canada.

Producer groups, non-profits, government bodies, industries, and researchers formed what is now the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) in 1993 to respond to health and safety issues in agriculture.

As a national non-profit organization, CASA encourages farm safety. They work with partners in government, business, and farming organizations across the country to support initiatives that equip producers, their families, and their workers with the information and tools needed to make farms a safe place to live, work, and play.

CASA’s mandate is multifaceted, including:

Providing financial support to for adaptive technology to injured farmers

• Promoting farm safety education for youth through our support of the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day® program

Collecting and analyzing Canadian agricultural fatality data

• Promoting machinery safety through CASA’s support of the Technical Committee on Agricultural Safety, a body that reviews and develops agricultural machinery standards in Canada, and through Speak Up for Safer Equipment, an online tool that farmers can use to report equipment-related safety concerns to members of the Technical Committee

• Raising awareness about the need for safety in the agricultural community through Canadian Agricultural Safety Week

• Bringing together safety champions from across the country to network on safety issues via CASA’s annual farm safety conference and AGM

• Developing farm safety tools and resources to help make farms safer, including CASA’s keystone business-risk management tool the Canada FarmSafe Plan, a National Occupational Standard for businesses looking to hire an Agricultural Occupational Health and Safety Specialist, and farm safety training courses

• The BeGrainSafe program, an initiative that will bring grain safety education and training to rural communities.
