2018 Health and Safety Statistics for Working at Heights in Ontario

Unfortunately, fall accidents, injuries, and deaths continue to happen in the workplace every year. In Canada, over 40,000 workers are injured due to fall accidents each year.

According to the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association, falling from heights continues to be a leading cause of injuries and fatalities in the Ontario construction industry as of June, 2018; “despite the fact that working at heights (WAH) training is mandatory and must meet a provincial standard, workers are still dying or suffering life-altering injuries.”

In 2013, 10 workers died from fall accidents in Ontario; according to the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, there has been one fatal fall accident in 2018. With greater emphasis on training and safety practices today, why do fall accidents still occur at a high rate?

Accidents still occur because:

  • Poor working conditions still exist (such as poor lighting or slippery surfaces)
  • Workers or supervisors fail to set up proper protective equipment (such as guardrails)
  • Equipment (such as ladders) may be old, unstable, or used improperly
  • Fall protection equipment is forgotten, not used, or used incorrectly
  • Lack of training and poor overall workplace safety practices

Workplace falls are costly for everyone, from the families who suffer loss and the workers who must take time off work due to injuries, to the compensation companies must provide to injured workers. Did you know that in 2015 alone, companies spent $52M compensating employees who were injured on the job?

All workers who work on construction projects and who use fall protection equipment must complete a CPO-approved working at heights course. Providing proper training for employees is the best way to prevent workplace accidents, injuries, and fatalities – and comply with the law!
