Spill Response Training: 3 Things You Need to Know

Why Spill Response Training Is important

According to the Ontario Environmental Protection Act, it is your duty as an owner or controller of a spilled pollutant to report and clean up a spill. You must do everything you can to prevent and eliminate the negative effects of a spill. This includes restoring the natural environment to its original state.

If you cause a spill and cannot or will not respond to properly clean it up, the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks has the authority under the EPA to order you to do so.

It is therefore imperative to get your employees trained if there are hazardous materials at risk of being spilled at your place of work.

The safety of your workers is at stake, and you also risk facing legislation if spills aren’t handled properly.

Who Needs To Take This Course

Spill response training is designed for employers, supervisors, workers, workplace spill response or emergency response team members, Joint Health and Safety Committee members, and Environmental Managers.

However, it’s open to any worker who desires to learn safe, practical steps for spill response as well as gaining a deeper understanding of their duties under the Ontario Environmental Protection Act.

As mentioned in the introduction, the spill response training offered by ACUTE is approved by the Ontario Wastewater Certification Office, which issues licenses to Waste Water Operators.

Spill response training is particularly important for operators at water treatment and sewage plants.

What You Learn During Spill Response Training

Spill response training covers the legislative requirements and measures of spill reporting and cleanup. As an active participant, you will be taught practical strategies to both prevent and safely contain workplace spills.

Training programs are routinely customized to reflect client sites and products.

Specific topics include:

  • Spill law and regulations: Ontario Environmental Protection Act
  • Defining a reportable spill and reporting requirements
  • Creating a safe spill response plan
  • Recognize hazards
  • Assessing risk
  • Controlling risk
  • Personal Protective Equipment selection
  • Evaluating controls
  • Sorbents and cleanup materials

In this course, you will learn through classroom interaction with experienced instructors, demonstration and hands-on training in the care and use of equipment, detailed handouts, videos and quizzes, and mock spill response drills.

Keep in mind it’s a ½ day course (4 Hours), or a full day (8 Hours) if you want to include the practical spill drills.

There are some great benefits to both approaches: by completing your training on-site, you save on travel time; by completing your training at our facility, you benefit from our spacious training room, our state of the art hands-on training space, and full use of the break room.
