Confined Space Entry Training – Fundamental Guide: Part 3
What You Learn in Confined Space Entry Training
Many workplaces contain spaces that are defined as confined spaces. These areas are not necessarily designed for people, but are large enough for workers to enter and perform certain jobs. Confined spaces are considered high-risk work areas, and workers and would-be rescuers have been killed on the job in the past.
Due to the dangerous nature this work, there are very specific rules you need to follow when you work in and around these spaces. Using ACUTE’s training program as an example, the confined space entry training will familiarize you with Ontario Regulation 632/05 – Confined Spaces. Again, this was covered in Part 1 of this guide.
Additionally, the training program is intended to provide entrants, attendants, and competent persons the skills and training required to recognize confined space entry risks and how to establish measured and corresponding controls. Refer to Part 2 of this guide for more information on who qualifies as a competent person.
Finally, you will have the opportunity to become familiar with, inspect, and use Confined Space Entry (CSE) access equipment and air quality instrumentation.

Breaking Down Your Training Day
A confined space entry training course typically lasts eight hours, so you should set aside a whole day. Here’s what you can expect that eight hours to involve:
Training program topics include:
- Confined space entry accidents
- Regulation 632/05 – Confined Spaces overview
- Statutory and regulatory responsibilities
- Confined space documents
- Recognizing confined space entry hazards
- Assessing risk
- Controlling hazards
- Evaluating control measures
- Air quality monitoring
- Ventilation and purging
- Lock-out/Tag-out

Confined space entry training is conducted using a mix of educational and practical styles of teaching. In this course, therefore, you will learn through classroom interaction with experienced instructors, an exploration of legislative requirements, demonstration and hands-on training in the care and use of equipment, as well as detailed handouts, videos, and quizzes.

Hands-on training will help you get acclimated with working in confined spaces.
Where You Need to Go
To achieve that balance of classroom learning and in-the-field action, your confined space entry training should be conducted at an appropriate safety training center that offers the following:
- Industry standard health and safety equipment and technologies
- Simulation areas for a full suite of training programs (i.e. working at heights, confined spaces, and hazardous materials)
- Classroom facilities for lecture and technical training delivery
- Human dummies for confined space rescue and hazardous material controls.
That’s exactly what ACUTE’s training course offers – check our calendar to pick a date that works best for you.

“I’m the Health and Safety Manager for PNR Railworks Inc., working out of the Guelph, ON, office and we first experienced ACUTE’s professionalism when we hired them to help us out with a Confined Space Job. I was so happy with their work I contacted them to see what else they might be able to do for us and eventually I booked our entire office/management/mechanical staff to do our Working At Heights and Emergency First Aid. They even came to our office/yard to do some Loader training for us too. I was very pleased by all of the training and look forward to working with Acute again in the future.”
