Working at Heights

As of April 1, 2015, employers in Ontario must ensure that workers on Construction Projects who may use any of the following fall protection equipment:

  • Travel restraint systems
  • Fall restricting systems
  • Fall arrest systems
  • Safety nets
  • Work belts or safety belts

must successfully complete an approved training program, delivered by an approved training provider before the worker can work at heights.

Any person who may be exposed to fall hazards during their work will find this training beneficial. Although the Working at Heights training program is geared toward those working on construction sites, those working in industrial, mining, or health care sectors will find the content comprehensive and relevant for their workplaces.

A shorter duration, Fall Protection training program is also offered to those whose work is not covered under the Ontario Regulation 213/91 – Construction Projects.

More information about ACUTE’s WAH course.

WAH Refresher

The WAH Refresher course must be taken 3 years following the initial training program in order to remain compliant with regulations given by the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. A refresher is subsequently required every three years as long as the participant wants to remain certified.

As outlined by the Government of Ontario, “Working at heights refresher training reinforces key learning outcomes and will also keep learners up to date on any legislative, regulatory or equipment (technological) changes which may impact working at heights in construction.”

Upon completion of the half-day course, your certification will be valid for another three years.

Here are the currently acceptable forms of proof of previous training that you can bring for the refresher:

Confined Space Entry

Confined spaces are high-risk work areas that are not designed for human occupancy. As a result, there are very specific rules you must follow if you will be working in and around these spaces.

ACUTE’s training program will familiarize you with the requirements of Ontario Regulation 632/05 – Confined Spaces.

Furthermore, the training program is intended to provide you with the training required to recognize confined space entry risks and how to establish measured and corresponding controls.

Participants will have the opportunity to become familiar with, inspect and use Confined Space Entry (CSE) access equipment and air quality instrumentation.

Watch for what you can expect from ACUTE’s confined space course.

Confined Space Rescue

According to the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, “the employer shall ensure that no worker enters or remains in a confined space unless, in accordance with the relevant plan, adequate written on-site rescue procedures that apply to the confined space have been developed and are ready for immediate implementation.”

If you are an employer, supervisor, or worker who may be involved with planning or implementing a confined space rescue plan, this training is for you.

Note: Confined Space Entry is a prerequisite for the Confined Space Rescue course.
