Respiratory protection is vital, especially in the COVID era, so today we are going to look at how you can keep your workers safe through proper fit testing.
Acute has over 100 years of combined experience with in-house or on-site worker environmental and safety training. We want to help you get the training you need to keep your workers safe.
We’ll explain what respiratory protection and fit testing are, the government regulations surrounding them, and how you can get the best training to protect your employees. So, let’s get started.
Get the respiratory protection and fit testing you need
Respiratory Protection
According to the Government of Ontario, O. Reg. 833, if you are unable to protect your workers from exposure to a hazardous biological or chemical agent, then you must provide them with a respirator that is appropriate to the situation they are working in.
Some of the requirements outlined in Regulation 833 include:
- Setting up written procedures and protocols surrounding the selection, maintenance, and use of respirators
- Providing proper training and instructing your workers about the care and use of the respirators before they ever use them
- Ensuring that your respirators are well-maintained and kept in good condition
- Appointing a respiratory protection program administrator
Respiratory Protection Training
Before any of your workers use a respirator on the job, they must receive proper training. This instruction needs to include:
- Understanding the limitation of the respirator
- Learning how to inspect and properly maintain the respirator including “in the case of an air-purifying respirator, end of service life indicators or change out schedules for the cartridge, canister or filter”
- Proper fitting of the respirator
- Cleaning and disinfecting the respirator

Workers need proper training before using respirators
Respirator Fit Testing
It is extremely important that the respirator you use fits properly. Tight-fitting respirators need to be tested for their fit by either a qualitative or quantitative fit test. ACUTE can provide you with the proper quantitative fit testing you require by law. Call or email us for more information.
Respiratory Protection Program
Your respiratory protection program should include the following, in addition to the requirements set out in Regulation 833 and should be designed with the help of your joint health and safety committee or health and safety representative:
- Training for your workers who will be conducting fit testing
- Training for your program administrator
- Program administration documentation and evaluation
- Fit testing for all respirators every 2 years – if you use self-contained breathing apparatuses, then the fit testing must be quantitative
- Testing of the air quality before you do a filter change and after any major service work, modification, or extensive repairs
Workers who conduct fit testing need the proper training
Why Quantitative Fit Testing Is So Important
As an employer, you want to make sure that your workers are always protected on the job, especially in the COVID era, and you want to make sure that you are in compliance with government safety regulations.
Quantitative fit testing will give you an extremely accurate measurement of the fit of your respirators. As an employer, this type of respiratory protection will help you ensure that your workers’ respirators are providing them with adequate protection as required by law.
ACUTE can provide you with this type of quantitative fit testing. Not only will we make sure that your respirators fit properly, but we will also provide you with a fit test report and a fit test card for each individual testing.
