Supervisor Health and Safety Awareness Training
1. Who Needs to Take Supervisor Health and Safety Awareness Training?
According to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, employers need to make sure that any supervisors that work for you must complete a basic occupational health and safety awareness training program. This training needs to meet the requirements that are set out in subsection 3 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
This type of training is extremely helpful for the following individuals:
- Supervisors
- Foremen
- Lead hands
- New hires who are starting in supervisory positions

2. When Do You Need to Take This Training?
You need to take your Occupational Health and Safety Awareness training within one week of performing your work as a supervisor. If you previously completed this training for a different employer, you need to show your employer proof that you have completed it. Your new employer needs to verify that your previous training meets the requirements set out in the Occupational Health and Safety Act subsection (3).
3. Why Is Supervisor Health and Safety Awareness Training Important?
Supervisor Health and Safety Awareness Training is important not only because it is a legal requirement of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, but it will also prepare you for your critical role as a supervisor in your workplace. It will help you be more competent with your responsibility of making sure that every reasonable precaution has been taken to keep your workers safe.

4. What Topics Must Your Supervisor Health and Safety Awareness Training Include?
The course that you take must include the following training topics:
- An explanation of the duties and rights of workers under the Occupational Health and Safety Act
- An explanation of the duties of employers and supervisory under the Act
- What the roles are for joint health and safety committees as well as health and safety representatives
- What the roles are with respect to occupational health and safety for the following: the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, and entities designated under section 22.5 of the Act
- How you can recognize, assess and control workplace hazards and how you can evaluate those controls
- “Sources of information on occupational health and safety. O. Reg. 297/13, s. 2 (3)”
Your training needs to cover the topics set out by the Act
5. Record of Training Requirements
As an employer, you are required to keep a record of the basic occupational health and safety awareness training that both your workers and supervisors have completed. If one of your workers or supervisors has completed this type of training program, then you need to provide them with written proof of their training if they request it.
If one of your supervisors is exempt from training under one of the exemptions of the Act, then you must also provide them with written proof of the exemption if they ask for it. Employers must also provide written proof of completion of training for up to six months after a worker or supervisor is no longer working for you if they request it.

- The roles of the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, and entities designated under section 22.5 of the Act with respect to occupational health and safety
- How to recognize, assess and control workplace hazards, and evaluate those controls
- Sources of information on occupational health and safety
