2. Who needs to take a supervisor safety training
The Occupational Health and Safety Act states that if you have supervisors working for you, you must make sure that they complete a basic occupational health and safety awareness training program. This training needs to meet the requirements listed above as well as the requirements set out in subsection 3 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
This type of safety training is extremely beneficial for the following individuals:
- Supervisors
- Foremen
- Lead hands
- New hires who are starting in supervisory positions
Supervisor Health and Safety Awareness Training is important not only because it is a legal requirement of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, but it will also prepare you for your critical role as a supervisor in your workplace. It will help you be more competent with your responsibility of making sure that every reasonable precaution has been taken to keep the workers under your supervision safe.
Supervisor safety training can help you keep your workers safe on the job
3. When supervisor safety training needs to take place
Supervisor health and safety training is very important and cannot be neglected. In fact, you need to take your Occupational Health and Safety Awareness training within one week of performing your work as a supervisor.
If you previously completed this training for a different employer, you need to show your employer proof that you have completed it. Your new employer needs to verify that your previous training meets the requirements set out in the Occupational Health and Safety Act subsection (3).
You need to take your training within one week of starting your role as a supervisor
4. Exemptions from supervisor health and safety awareness training
There are a couple of situations where your supervisors may be exempt from taking a basic occupational health and safety awareness training program. These include:
1. If your supervisor was doing work as a supervisor before the occupational health and safety awareness training regulations came into effect in 1990
and
If you verify that before the regulations came into effect, your supervisor took an occupational health and safety awareness training program that meets the same requirements as the current regulations.
2. If your supervisor worked for another employer and was exempt under the conditions outlined in point 1 above
and
If your supervisor gives you proof of the exemption.
You may be exempt from training if you took equivalent training before the OHSA regulations came into effect
5. Regulations regarding records of training
As an employer, you must keep a record of the basic supervisor health and safety training that both your workers and supervisors have completed. If one of your workers or supervisors has completed this type of training program, then you need to provide them with written proof of their training if requested.
If one of your supervisors is exempt from training under one of the exemptions of the Act listed above, then you must also provide them with written proof of the exemption if they ask for it.
Employers must also provide written proof of completion of training for up to six months after a worker or supervisor is no longer working for you if they request it, so make sure you keep these records available.
