The Basics of Aerial Lift Training
What Is Aerial Lift Training?
Aerial lift training teaches you how to safely operate various types of elevating work platforms. In fact, aerial lift training and elevating work platform train can be used interchangeably.
Depending on your workplace and training requirements, you may receive training for all or just some of the various types of aerial lifts. With ACUTE’s Elevating Work Platform training, for example, you can choose to take the Scissor & Boom course, or just the Scissor training course.
Aerial lift training provides participants with the knowledge and practical know-how to safely use and operate these complex and potentially dangerous machines. Aerial lift training is also a form of working at heights training, seeing as you will be working at heights while on aerial lift devices. Please note, however, that it does not replace the required Working At Heights training course for those working on construction projects.
Check out the video below for an example of the training looks like:

Who Needs Aerial Lift Training?
Anyone using aerial lifts/elevating work platforms must be properly trained before using machinery. That could include those who work on construction sites, in a warehouse or factory setting, and even in agriculture.
According to the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) and under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), employers are obligated to take every reasonable precaution for the protection of the workers. Prior to allowing an employee to work with an aerial lift, the following questions must be answered:
- Has specific training been provided to address identified hazards while using the elevating work platform? That should include:
- Training on fall protection
- Material handling
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
Remember: Improper use of aerial lifts can result in serious or fatal injuries. Unfortunately, accidents can and do happen. In March 2018, a serious accident was reported in Mississauga and the cause was deemed to be driver error. Don’t hesitate – sign up for training today to ensure the safety of everyone involved in your workplace.

What Does Aerial Lift Training Involve?
As has already been discussed, machines such as scissor lifts and boom lifts can be safe solutions to working at height challenges, but lack of training, improper use and defective equipment have led to serious incidents involving workers in Ontario.
The aerial lift training course has been constructed to prepare operators for the safe use of elevating work platforms. There’s a theory module covers all classes of EWPs, and a practical module that covers only the type of EWP used in your particular workplace.
Training topics include:
- Legislation and standards
- Hazards and safe work practices
- Platform stability
- Classes and features
- Safe operating procedures
- Inspections
- Class specific skill testing
You will learn through classroom interaction with experienced instructors, the exploration of legislative requirements, demonstration and hands-on training on a specific class of EWP, practical skills testing evaluation, as well as detailed handouts, videos and quizzes.
A typical aerial lift training course runs 8 hours, so be sure to set aside a whole day.
