3 Things You Need To Know About Fall Arrest Training

1. Fall Arrest Training – Course Contents

Fall arrest training – also known as fall protection – can be modified to address specific equipment used in your workplace. Generally speaking, though, this is what you can expect to learn:

  • Sector-specific legislation
  • When Working at Heights training is required
  • Fall hazards
  • Controlling fall hazards
  • Hierarchy of controls
  • Fall prevention strategies and systems
  • Fall protection systems
  • Ladder safety
  • Harness inspection and fitting exercise & evaluation
  • Lanyard inspection exercise and evaluation
  • Rescue plan – components and purpose
  • Safe anchor exercise

Over the course of the four-hour training session, you will learn from experienced instructors, through interaction and discussion with peers, and by participating in hands-on training in the care and use of equipment. You will also receive detailed handouts, watch videos, and take quizzes as part of the evaluation process.

At ACUTE, we can tailor the fall arrest training course material to your company. We do this by incorporating your corporate policies and procedures right into the training courses we conduct for your employees.

Additionally, we can use examples and scenarios in our training that are specific to your company and that you know your employees will be facing in their work. All of this can take place in our world-class health and safety training facility located in Waterloo, or at your own facility!

2. Defining Fall Arrest

Fall arrest is the safe stopping of a person that is already falling, and also involves minimizing the possibility of falling to begin with.

There are systems used to arrest a worker if a fall from heights occurs. These systems consist of an anchorage, connectors and full-body harness, and may include a lanyard, deceleration device and/or lifeline.

Fall arrest training will, therefore, teach you what to do in the event of a fall while working at heights. It is important to note that this is not a replacement for Working At Heights Training; that course is required for all construction project workers under Ontario Regulation 213/91.

This training is geared towards those working at heights in industrial settings, mining operations, health care and residential facilities, and other workplaces that are not considered to be construction projects.

3. Is Fall Arrest Training Right For You?

The purpose of fall arrest training is to:

  1. Strengthen workplace safety culture by elevating the profile and importance of preventing falls from heights.
  2. Provide workers who may be exposed to the hazard of falling with adequate knowledge about fall hazards and general safety practices to work safely at heights.
  3. Provide workers who use personal fall protection equipment with sufficient knowledge about its purpose and use; and
  4. Reduce the number of fall-from-heights incidents, injuries, and fatalities.

Employers, supervisors, and workers who work at heights in any workplace other than construction projects will find this training valuable.

Without proper fall arrest training, the likelihood of employee injury increases. It’s important, then, that you help your employees prepare for scenarios that have not been encountered, and learn from any accidents that have occurred in the past.
