2. Agribusiness Safety: Fire Extinguisher Guidelines
The proper use of fire extinguishers is an important part of fire prevention. The following are guidelines for fire extinguishers.
Easily Accessible: You should have appropriate fire extinguishers that are located in easy-to-find spots throughout your worksite.
In Vehicles: You should also have fire extinguishers in each vehicle including cars, trucks, tractors, and other machinery.
Maintained Monthly: Assign particular employees the job of checking and maintaining the fire extinguishers on a regular basis so that they are always ready to use if needed. Every month they should be checked to make sure that their pins are properly inserted and that their gauge levels are correct.
Yearly Training: You should also go over how to use our fire extinguishers each year.
Report Use Immediately: Make sure that all employees know that once you use a fire extinguisher you should report it to your supervisor; never just put it away without reporting it.
Serviced Yearly: Get all of your fire extinguishers serviced yearly by a competent contractor.
Further Information: If you need further information about the use of your fire extinguishers, you can contact your local fire department.
Agribusiness Safety: Get your fire extinguishers checked monthly and serviced yearly
3. Agribusiness Safety: Enforce No Smoking Rules:
You should strictly enforce a no smoking policy, especially around flammable materials and machinery. Make sure you have no smoking signs posted close to your fuel supplies, pesticides, and other chemicals.
4. Agribusiness Safety: Properly Store Flammable Materials:
Make sure you have separate containers to store oily rags, smoking materials, dust flammable scraps, and chemical wastes.
5. Agribusiness Safety: Handle Compressed Gases Carefully:
Store any containers of compressed gases in a secure location and in an upright position. Keep them away from any heat sources, stairs, elevators, and exits. Regularly inspect them for dents and corrosion.
6. Agribusiness Safety: Handle Fuel Safely:
Fuel such as diesel and gasoline should be kept in tanks or drums made of steel or another appropriate material and located at least 40 feet away from any buildings or stored underground. The tanks need to be adequately ventilated and grounded.
Agribusiness Safety: Keep gasoline stored properly
7. Agribusiness Safety: New Employees:
Each time you hire a new employee, you need to make them aware of your fire prevention measures. Make sure that you show your new employees the location of your fire exits and marshaling areas designated away from buildings. You should also demonstrate the warning signals that you have in place such as what the fire alarm sounds like and show them how to use any fire extinguishers you have in your buildings and in your vehicles.
8. Agribusiness Safety: Fire Protection Devices
Make Sure You Have adequate fire protection devices at your agribusiness. You should have the following in place to help put out any possible fires:
- Fire extinguishers: As stated above, your fire extinguishers need to be in the appropriate locations, the right type, and you need to have a sufficient number of them on hand.
- Fire hoses: Make sure that your fire hoses are properly mounted and visibly marked.
- Sprinkler heads: Your sprinkler heads need to have the proper clearance.
- Fire equipment: Make sure that your fire equipment is clearly marked, easily accessible, and in good condition.
- Signage: Your signage needs to tell you what to do in case of fire and should include the number of the fire department.
- Fire emergency alarm system: A fire emergency alarm system is optional but is a good idea to have.
Agribusiness Safety: Fire hoses need to be properly mounted

“By far the best place for training. They offer several different types of training and are very professional. I have been doing my joint health and safety committee training this week and could not be more satisfied. Patrick has been teaching the class and he’s an awesome teacher. He’s funny, knowledgeable and cares about what he’s teaching. So many classes like these can be boring and drag on but tomorrow is day 5 and I feel like the week flew by.”
