Confined Space Training Online – Pros

Convenience:

One of the biggest advantages to taking your confined space training online is the convenience. You can do your training from home or wherever and whenever it is most convenient for you.

Even though doing confined space training online means that you can learn the theory involved in the training, you won’t be able to learn the practical side of things because the hands-on learning aspect is non-existent. Therefore, doing your training in person is the best option.

Health Concerns:

During particular times such as a pandemic, you may feel more comfortable with online training so that you don’t become exposed to harmful diseases.

However, if you are fully vaccinated and you choose a training provider that has taken the necessary precautions to provide safe, physically distanced learning, then you can feel more confident about doing your training in person.

Confined Space Training Online – Cons

Not Properly Trained:

It is difficult to become properly trained if you take your confined space training online. Online training allows you to read about the theories involved in keeping you safe in a confined space. However, what it won’t do is actually put those theories into practice at a training facility that provides you with real-work simulators that will give you the confidence and proper skills required when you are on the job to stay safe.

The Confined Space Guidelines put out by the Ontario government point out that simply giving instructions to a person working in a confined space will not ensure that they are competent to perform their job safely. They state that “Hands-on training should be an essential part of the confined space training.

No Crucial Hands-on Experience with Equipment:

It’s not enough to simply give instructions to a worker who is going to be working in a confined space. In order to keep you safe and for you to become competent, you need to have hands-on experience with the actual equipment that you will be using at your workplace.

Using actual safety equipment in a confined space simulator will give you the expertise that will keep you safe when you have to use that same equipment in real life.

Lack of Instructor Interaction:

If you take your confined space training online, you can read about what is required while working in a confined space, but if you have any questions, you can’t ask an instructor face to face.

In addition, your instructor can’t ask you follow-up questions and quiz you to see if you really have understood the material that was covered. Reading about how to follow safety practices is totally different from actually getting a chance to put them into practice. Instead, having an instructor watch you to ensure that you are working correctly, and correcting anything that needs to be improved upon is much more valuable.

Who Needs to Take Confined Space Training

According to the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, “Every worker who works in a confined space must receive adequate training in the recognition of hazards associated with confined spaces and training to be able to safely perform the assigned duties for that specific confined space.

Training is also required for persons contributing to the work activity (i.e., performs related work) even those not entering the confined space, for example, attendants and rescue workers.”

What Should Your Confined Space Training Cover

Your confined space training should teach you the following:

  • How to recognize and identify potential hazards associated with the confined spaces that will be entered.
  • Teaching you the evaluation and control procedures for the identification of potential hazards.
  • Getting you familiar with all equipment such as ventilation equipment (blowers), harnesses, and air quality monitors (e.g., Oxygen/combustible meters) that will be used while in the confined space.
  • Helping you to become familiar with all personal protective equipment (e.g., respirators) that you will be using while in the confined space.
  • Teaching you procedures for entering the confined space.
  • Teaching you procedures to follow in the event of a situation developing that could present additional risk to you or in an emergency.
  • Learning about the specific work to be done while in the confined space.
