Program Content

Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development data shows that workers responsible for installing or maintaining electrical equipment often do not turn off the power supply. Working on live, energized electrical equipment is a major safety hazard. Metal ladders, raised dump-truck bodies and crane booms have been implicated in a number of electricity-related injuries at construction sites. There have been more than 70 electricity-related fatalities in all sectors in the last decade. Of those, about half occurred while workers were working near exposed electrical equipment. Workers also continue to suffer critical injuries like arc-flash burns.

This training program aims to make workers aware of the hazards of working on or around live electrical equipment as well as the measures and procedures that are required when live work is unavoidable. This program will provide participants clear instruction and information on the technology, formulas, regulatory standards, and other considerations needed when dealing with arc flash assessment.

Training program topics include:

  • Legislation and CSA Standard Z462 review
  • Risk assessment (risk categories)
  • Arc fault current calculations
  • Incident energy calculation
  • Ways of reducing arc flash hazards
  • Determining the level of personal protective equipment (PPE) required when in proximity to arc flash hazards

You will learn by:

  • Classroom interaction with experienced instructors
  • Exploring legislative requirements
  • Detailed handouts, videos and quizzes

Who should enroll in this training program?

Employers, supervisors, lead hands, maintenance and engineering personnel who may perform or directly or indirectly oversee live electrical work in the workplace. Joint Health & Safety Committee members and Health and Safety Administrators will also find this course beneficial.
