Fall Arrest Training: FAQ’s

Since there are no legal requirements for taking fall arrest training, it does not expire. However, if you have workers who feel they need to take a refresher course, then it is a good idea to encourage this for their own safety. Working at Heights training, on the other hand does expire after 3 years.

No. Working at Heights is a training course that you must take if you use fall protection equipment on a construction project. It is a legal requirement as outlined in the O. Reg. 297/13: Occupational Health and Safety Awareness and Training requirements.

Fall Arrest training is a more general type of training that isn’t specifically tailored to the construction industry and it can be modified to meet the specific needs of your individual industry.

Fall arrest refers to equipment that is specially designed to stop a fall that has already taken place. For example, if you slip, then your fall arrest equipment will stop your fall in mid-air.

On the other hand, fall restraint refers to equipment that is designed to prevent you from falling in the first place such as a safety railing.

Fall protection is a system of controls that are put in place to prevent workers from falling (fall restraint equipment) or if they do fall, will keep them from getting seriously injured (fall arrest equipment).

There are 4 basic categories of fall protection. They include:

  • Fall elimination: finding ways to perform tasks without being above the ground
  • Fall prevention: using various barricades placed near the edge of a fall hazard to prevent a fall
  • Fall arrest: using devices that will stop you falling and getting hurt
  • Administrative controls: implementing devices such as warning lines, safety observers, or safety policies that will train workers to follow fall protection safety measures.

There are several great reasons to take fall arrest training. They include:

  • Equip your workers who may be exposed to the hazard of falling with adequate knowledge about fall hazards and general safety practices to work safely at heights.
  • Strengthen your workplace safety culture by making your workers aware of the importance of preventing falls from heights.
  • Provide your workers who use personal fall protection equipment with sufficient knowledge about its purpose and use
  • Significantly reduce the number of fall-from-heights incidents, injuries, and fatalities

The cost of fall arrest training will vary depending on the company providing the training and the extent of the course. A thorough training course done by a reputable training company will cost about $140-$200.

The length of time that the fall arrest training will take will depend on the depth of the course. A thorough course will usually last about 4 hours.

Here’ what our customers are saying…

“I work at the University of Guelph as an arborist. Ron Campbell provided a small socially distanced group and myself with working at heights training. Ron has a wealth of knowledge and kept everyone engaged with many “real life” examples of working at heights scenarios and facts. We have also received elevated work platform training with Patrick from Acute training. Patrick is also a very friendly, knowledgeable and engaging professional trainer. I truly believe that the best trainers are those with practical experience and the trainers at Acute have that locked down.”
