HAZWOPER Refresher Training

HAZWOPER Refresher Training: What You Need To Know

Who needs the HAZWOPER refresher, and when?

A HAZWOPER refresher is needed every year to maintain certification.

Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training (HAZWOPER) is required if you are going to be involved in an emergency response operation dealing with hazardous waste, or if you will be performing duties at a waste site where hazardous materials or contamination are present. Environmental engineers, environmental remediation workers, and contractors commonly attend these training programs.

Before you begin those tasks, therefore, you must sign up for the full HAZWOPER training course (40 hours). From that point on, you must register for the 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher every year in order to maintain certification.

You must maintain HAZWOPER certification if you will be performing duties at a site where
hazardous materials or contamination are present.

What will you learn?

In general terms, you will be reminded of the following:

It may seem like a lot to attend a HAZWOPER refresher once a year, but the great thing about this course is it involves a level of customization with respect to the specific hazards in your workplace.

For example, there is time allotted for discussion of incidents that have occurred or issues that have arisen in your workplace over the past year.

During the course, you will learn through classroom interaction with experienced instructors, scenarios and field exercises, demonstrations, and hands-on training in the care and use of equipment.

The HAZWOPER refresher can be tailored to the specifications of your workplace.

What is HAWZOPER?

HAZWOPER is an acronym for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Guidelines have been developed and are maintained by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

This organization regulates hazardous waste operations and emergency services in the United States, and their guidelines have been adopted for training in Canada.

HAZWOPER originated from the United States Department of Defense’s Hazardous Waste Operations (HAZWOP). The program was implemented on military bases affected by the disposal of hazardous waste left on-site after World War II.

In 1990, OSHA published Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response 1910.120, which remains the standard for the health-and-safety requirements that your company must meet to perform a hazardous waste clean up or respond to emergencies. An updated HAZWOPER website was launched in 2017.

In Canada, HAZWOPER falls under the legislation of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, CEPA 1999.
