Making Health and Safety Fun: Training Tips from Acute Safety

Make it relevant to the tasks workers are doing

The most important thing is to make sure trainees see the benefit of attending. In order to get people’s attention and encourage them to engage, you need to make sure the content you’re delivering is useful and relevant.

Right at the beginning of the training session, kick things off by giving a brief overview of what trainees are going to learn and how those skills will help keep them safe on the job. This can apply to any field – no matter what type of workplace you need training for, there are ways to make all types of health & safety training fun!

Environmental and Safety Training Courses

Health and safety fun is important but should always take a backseat to relevant education.

Encourage participation

Whatever you are teaching, try to make it relatable to the trainees by using real examples, case studies, and creative metaphors. The key here is to allow room for those in attendance to offer their experiences – they’re the ones doing this work on a day-to-day basis, and can therefore speak to the realities of the material being presented.

You can also play into people’s competitive sides – in a healthy way! Puzzles or riddles, crosswords, memory games, ordering tasks – all of these can keep your attendees engaged and on-task.

Mix things up with a game or word challenge!

Offer incentives

Trainees are traditionally more motivated to successfully complete the course if their efforts are recognized and if they have something to show for it at the end.

Let attendees know they will receive personalized certificates to mark their participation. You should also consider extra incentives such as small prizes for those who are most engaged.

People like to be rewarded for their efforts.

Use multi-media

People learn in different ways. Some prefer videos and diagrams, while others respond better to more traditional lecture format. Try to mix things up with a bit of both, using film clips, photos, YouTube and charts to bring home your point.

Music can also set the mood and get trainees energized before your session and during breaks. Play something upbeat to get them pumped up in the morning, and lower it back down to let them know it’s time to start. You can also use music during the session – soothing classical can help people concentrate while completing tasks or group work, and fun pop tunes can lighten the mood during games.

Remember to tone it down when driving home the most important points.

The lessons include plenty of hands on components which definitely help retain the knowledge taught within the classrooms. Above all, the instructors know their stuff, they are all extremely knowledgeable and draw upon their own experiences to help engage the class. If I could give them higher than 5 stars, I would, and I would most definitely do my training refresher courses here again.” – Ali.
