It is also important to note that many workers use EWPs on their job site to access project work at heights. The Construction Projects Regulation requires that: “An elevating work platform shall not be moved unless all workers on it are protected from ejection by being attached to an adequate anchorage point on the elevating work platform by a method of fall protection”

[O. Reg. 213/91 s. 148 (1) (d)]

The Construction Projects Regulation requires all workers who use/wear fall protection to have received Working At Heights training from a training facility which is approved by the Ontario Chief Prevention Officer as an Approved Training Provider. As such, all operators AND passengers on elevating work platforms used on project sites must have Working At Heights training.

Why Get Scissor Lift Training

Employers must provide their workers with adequate training. Scissor lift training is an important addition to the MLITSD required Working At Heights training course for many workers working on construction sites. Working with or around elevating work platforms presents many potential hazards. It is important for all workers to be aware and prepared. Some of the most common hazards include:

  • Being struck by moving equipment
  • Getting crushed between equipment or other objects
  • Exposure to electrical contact while operating a vehicle or equipment
  • Being struck by an inadequately secured load while being lifted or moved
  • Being struck or crushed by equipment tipping over
  • Source – Ontario construction sector plan 2017-2018

Ensuring your workers receive adequate elevating work platform training helps avoid and prevent incidents, injuries, and even death. There have been many reports of scissor lift and elevating work platform accidents in the GTA over the last few years. In May 2015, National Post reported that one worker was killed and another injured after a scissor lift tipped over at a construction site in Markham. In May 2016, the Brampton Guardian reported that a man was killed after suffering a ‘crushing’ injury while operating a boom lift. In May 2017, Northumberland News reported that two workers were seriously injured after a skyjack apparently malfunctioned and collapsed in Port Hope.

Ensuring workers get proper training also protects employers from hefty fines and legal action. In February 2017, Ontario Newsroom reported that an industrial crane and lifting devices company was fined $125,000 after a worker was electrocuted and killed while operating a scissor lift. After an investigation, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development concluded that the company’s worker did not follow the company’s “energy isolation and verification procedures” outlined in their manual.
